Is SEO immoral?

Bookmark and Share

Recently I came across an question on Quora.com, which is as the follows:

Is SEO immoral? (http://www.quora.com/Is-SEO-immoral)

We search for relevance via the search engine. By learning and manipulating the system to accomplish its goal, SEO makes it more likely that you will come upon a target that is irrelevant. Thereby, wasting the user’s time and resources. It could be considered advertising in the form of a search result.

IMO, this is a good question that deserves attention of every SEO.

I think the person who brought up this question isn’t alone, and there are a lot of people having the same question. To them, SEOs are the group of mighty but evil geeks that control what they see in the search engine results…

Time to make some clarifications, seriously.

What is SEO:

SEO means search engine optimization, namely optimization for search engines. Basically SEOs work as a road builder – we make it easier for crawlers to find, read, and comprehend the content of your website.

Is SEO immoral?

No, it isn’t.

SEO is a science, and science can be really dangerous once used by bad guys. Every science is a double-edged sword. But, it is not the fault of science.

For example, the nuclear power.

Nuclear power is a good alternative to traditional powers we used to use, which is good. But once adopted in the wars, nuclear bombs are powerful enough to destroy the world, which is of course bad.

So all in all, SEO’ers are just another group of professionals on this planet. What they do with their SEO knowledge determines if they are moral or not, and we only have ourselves to blame if we stray over to the dark side and capitalise on our knowledge of how to fool the algorithm, not SEO.
